What Books on Missions Would You Recommend to Pastors?
What books on missions would you recommend to pastors?
So, some books that I would read if I was a church pastor wanting to introduce missions into my church more, make it more primary, or a young person thinking about going into missions:
Number one would be To the Golden Shore by Courtney Anderson. That's the life of Adoniram Judson. A close complement to that would be The Three Mrs. Judsons. That's about the three women that were married to Adoniram, his wives. Two of them died before him, and the third one outlived him.
The next would be the autobiography of John Paton—P-A-T-O-N. That's just a phenomenal read. The close complement to that one would be Paul Schlehlein's book. It's a biography of Paton. It's a little bit skinnier. It's got some lessons, and it talks about his kids, obviously, much more than the autobiography.
Let the Nations Be Glad by John Piper is almost must-reading, especially chapter five. Chapter five of Let the Nations Be Glad is a phenomenal punch.
Beauty for Ashes by Iain Murray—that's the life of Amy Carmichael.
What Is the Mission of the Church? by Kevin DeYoung and Greg Gilbert—that's really, really helpful.
I would lean heavily on biography, though, as those seem to be the best.
